Where to go with kids in the Tatras

The High Tatras with children don't have to mean challenging mountain routes and endless hours on the trail. There are plenty of places and activities that are perfect for families — whether you have a toddler, a young child, or teenagers who prefer a more relaxed pace.

The mountains offer so much more than just hiking. The goal is not kilometers covered, but memories created and the joy of being together in nature.

Hrebienok — the foundation for families

Hrebienok is practically made for families. You can reach it comfortably by cable car from Stary Smokovec, which itself is exciting for children. From Hrebienok, easy trails lead in all directions, and you have a comfortable hut where you can rest and have a warm meal.

The view from Hrebienok is spectacular, and the walk around the area is manageable for all ages. You don't need to be a mountain expert — just comfortable shoes and a willingness to explore at a leisurely pace.

🍼 The smallest visitors — Rainerova Chata

Even families with the littlest ones can manage this route. The path from Hrebienok to Rainerova Chata is easy and well-marked. It takes about 25 minutes and offers beautiful views along the way.

You can refresh yourself with a unique mountain herb tea, hand-picked by the hut keeper Mr. Petras and his wife from the local meadows beneath the Tatras.

💧 Studenovodské Waterfalls

Children love water, and when it’s in motion, it puts them into an almost meditative state. The countless small and large waterfalls, huge rounded boulders, and the roar of the Studený Potok stream are sure to captivate them. The best part is that there is no such thing as bad weather for a visit. In fact, they are at their most beautiful and powerful during and right after the rain. You can also experience a special magic here in winter, when they transform into an ice kingdom. Since the trail can get slippery then, we highly recommend wearing microspikes (anti-slip shoe grips) or using trekking poles."

Many children remember the sound of water and the fresh air near the waterfall more than any number of peaks conquered. For them, that's the real mountain experience.

⛰️ Zamkovského Chata

Older or more energetic children will definitely manage this short hiking challenge. At an altitude of 1,475 meters above sea level, at the mouth of the Malá Studená Dolina valley, stands a beautiful wooden hut supplied year-round by mountain porters. From Hrebienok, you follow the red-marked trail for about 3 kilometers. Halfway through, you’ll be greeted by the Obrovský Waterfall (Giant Waterfall) and your first views of Starý Smokovec. Since the hut is highly popular, the trail remains accessible all year round. Try visiting in winter—your experience will be multiplied, and children are more than welcome here!

The route isn't about proving something — it's about being outside, moving together, and enjoying nature at a pace that works for everyone.
